Majnun
Majnun is a full-length play written by Layli Rohani. It shows the story of an Iranian woman, Asal, and her family coping with the recent loss of her mother. The story is told simultaneously alongside a new version of an old story, the story of Majnun. This story-within-a-story takes place inside Asal’s head as events from her own life unfold in a whimsical way with pirates and talking animals. In the end, as the two stories begin to weave themselves together, the family discovers they must learn how to come together to help each other carry this grief.
Majnun has had one reading at Cal Poly University in 2023 followed by a workshop with the Digital Development Project in 2024. The rights are available and the full script is on New Play Exchange.
Writer’s Block
Writer’s Block is a full-length play co-written by Layli Rohani. It’s the story of a young woman, Mae, who’s been beat down by a corporatization of storytelling. Intent on doing her own work in the face of Michael Bay-isms, she is nearly fired and must come up with a new story idea or risk losing her job.
This play had a full run production at Cal Poly University in California in late 2021. It is not available for use.
